What is UMA?

UMA is a decentralized financial contracts platform designed to enable Universal Market Access. It provides infrastructure for “priceless” financial contracts, which minimize reliance on oracles and aim to reduce related security and scalability challenges in decentralized finance. Its initial contracts are priceless synthetic tokens: ERC20 tokens designed to track a broad range of assets or other references while limiting on-chain price-data requirements. The UMA token supports system governance, allowing holders to participate in decisions about eligible contract types, supported asset categories, and key parameters and upgrades. It also supports dispute resolution through UMA’s Data Verification Mechanism (DVM). Although the priceless approach limits routine price requests, disputed contract interactions can trigger requests that token holders resolve through the DVM. UMA is associated with decentralized finance, oracle, derivatives, synthetic issuer, synthetic, Avalanche, and Ethereum ecosystem categories.
