What is Qtum?

Qtum is a decentralized, open-source smart contracts platform and value transfer protocol. It combines Bitcoin’s UTXO transaction model and core architecture with a Turing-complete blockchain stack designed to execute smart contracts and decentralized applications. The project uses proof-of-stake consensus, with node operators rewarded for validating transactions. Qtum is also described as a DGP-governed blockchain, allowing community participants to vote on certain network parameters. Its stated design aims to pair Bitcoin’s simple, stable transaction foundation with capabilities associated with Ethereum-style smart contracts. The project’s hybrid architecture incorporates tools developed by its foundation and draws on contributions from members of the Bitcoin and Ethereum communities. Qtum is categorized as a Smart Contract Platform and Proof of Stake (PoS) project, and is listed in the Made in China category. Its native QTUM tokens are associated with the network’s protocol and governance framework.
