Livepeer is a protocol project designed to provide a decentralized network for live video streaming. Its stated goal is to serve as a scalable, crypto-token-incentivized live media layer for the decentralized web stack, while offering an economically efficient alternative to centralized broadcasting solutions. The protocol uses delegated stake to coordinate participants who transcode video, validate work, and contribute processing and bandwidth. Livepeer Token (LPT) is the protocol token and is intended for staking, delegation, network coordination, and security. Participants can delegate LPT toward transcoders or validators, with stake helping route work and potential slashing addressing protocol violations. LPT also serves as a unit of account for the Livepeer ecosystem and may support related services such as DVR, closed captioning, ad insertion, and analytics. Broadcasters use Ether (ETH) for broadcasting, while network contributors receive ETH fees from broadcasters.
