Ethereum is an open blockchain platform for smart contracts and decentralized applications. Its Ethereum Virtual Machine lets developers create financial services, marketplaces, games, and other programs without relying on a central authority. ETH is the native asset. It pays transaction fees, supports staking that helps secure the network, provides collateral, and enables interaction with applications. A portion of transaction fees is burned, while validators receive rewards for processing activity and protecting the chain. Ethereum is distinguished by its large developer community, mature tooling, and broad application base. Much activity now takes place on layer-two networks connected to Ethereum. These networks expand capacity and the wider ecosystem, but they also change how activity and value flow back to the base chain. ETH therefore combines network security, application utility, and monetary functions.
