Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency and public blockchain launched in 2009. It enables people to transfer value directly, without a bank or government intermediary. Transfers are recorded on a shared ledger, while Proof of Work miners add blocks and help prevent double spending. BTC is the network’s native asset. It is used for peer-to-peer payments, settlement, and holding scarce digital value. New issuance is limited to 21 million coins and declines through scheduled halvings. Bitcoin’s distinguishing characteristics are permissionless access, censorship resistance, broad distribution, and a long operating history. Its ecosystem has also expanded beyond basic transfers, including Ordinal inscriptions and newer financial applications built around the network. Bitcoin is primarily a monetary and settlement asset rather than a platform whose value depends on protocol fees.
